We’ve had a wonderful first few weeks of school! It’s been a pleasure getting to know many parents at Curriculum Night and via thoughtful emails. Our students are getting to know each other, and we are getting to know them too. To further our learning about each other, and to aid in the writing of our memoirs, we are asking the students to make a ME BOX! The box should be filled with items that help them explain who they are outside the classroom. The box should be shoe box or cereal box sized and it should contain items that help our child tell about him/herself. Students will be expected to decorate their box with pictures, (drawings, magazine cut outs, photos etc.) and should include their name in the title. What our child chooses to put into the box is up to him/her, but should support some things that our child wants to share about him/herself. Examples might be hobbies, favorite collections, stuffed animals, pictures, or memorabilia of family events and family culture. Students will be expected to prepare a presentation that lasts between 2 and 3 minutes in which they will share and give a brief explanation of the items in their boxes and how they relate to their lives. Students will be evaluated on their presentations, so they should practice maintaining good eye contact, speaking clearly and cogently within the given time limit, and engaging the audience. The ME BOX is due Monday, September 26.
Example:”MS. YOUNG’’S BOX” would have a photo of her dogs, a garden implement, some fresh produce, a tent stake, her guitar pick, a good book, a banner from when she taught in Lithuania, and a t-shirt from when she taught in Medellin, Columbia. The box would be decorated on the outside with magazine cutouts representing various cultures and full of cut out words in Spanish. She’d group her talk into explaining the outside of the box, traveling, gardening both veggies and flowers, and other hobbies. She’d engage the audience by asking who enjoys traveling on new adventures and having them stand up as she did a poll for who has which pet at home.
