We have a three day school week as Tuesday and Friday are off for students.
Monday, we will be diving in to the election. Please ask our child what they learned when they come home Monday night. For those 16 students from our classroom who are in Battle of the Books, please help our child progress to the deadline for turning in four. It is coming up quickly. We had a wonderful opening to fifth grade where students learned to work together and to challenge themselves both academically and socially. I have already seen growth in many members of our classroom family. We had a wonderful week where we built community by learning to work together, and by learning classroom expectations, routines, and norms. All students understand the need to work hard and be kind as a means to making our classroom the best it can be. In terms of health, we need your help. Only three boxes of Kleenex and one container of antibacterial wipes came in. Could you all please send in one of each so our class can be healthy as well as productive? Thanks from the bottom of our snuffly noses and germy hands!
Last Friday, children were introduced to Google Classroom, where their literacy assignments will be posted and can also be submitted. Students, and their parents/guardians can also monitor literacy grades from this site. Our child can show you how. Again, grades the students are not happy with, can be resubmitted for a higher grade the next day. This week, math pages will also be coming back graded. The same policy applies. Any grade can be improved. We all learn from our mistakes. There is a PTA meeting this Monday night at 7. Please come hear Mr. Michel talk about the 5 Essentials survey.
Thanks to all of you who are helping supply our room with Battle Books. The calendar on which you signed up was just a venue for getting you to sign up. Books are welcome anytime, as our children are devouring them with gusto. Has our child turned in their Battle permission slip yet? We are beginning an in-depth study of poetry until Thanksgiving. We are also deeply exploring fractions, decimals, percents and their relationships to one another. Children are learning about physics with Mr. Combs; and, we are beginning our study of the first 13 colonies and the Revolutionary War. Forwarded for the

The Fine Arts Team Willard School District 65 2700 Hurd Ave Janell Bjorklund, Kristen Durning, Jason Ewing Dear Families,
As you might know, our students will be taking the ISAT beginning next week. From March 10 - March 21, students will be assessed in reading and math (and science for fourth grade); 100% of the test questions reflect the new Common Core State Standards adopted by Illinois. Typically, students will take the test in the morning before lunch and will only take one assessment each day. If a student is sick or misses a test one day, they will make it up upon their return. In those cases, they might end up taking two assessments in one day. Remember, while these assessments are important for our school, they should not be a source of stress to our students. Just encourage students to do their best! Dear Parents,
Our PTA's spring fundraiser is next weekend on March 8. This fundraiser helps support many things at our school, such as: -Field trips to enhance learning -Artist residencies and assemblies to bring culture to our students -Third graders have a fun week of Pioneer Days -Fifth graders' New Year's and graduation celebration -Scholarships for children to get glasses if they need them -Scholarships for camps over the summer. -Support for our awesome African American celebration and feast -Support for our super Hispanic heritage celebration and feast -A huge end of the year picnic with DJ -Student newspaper and the science fair If you are able to attend and support the Spring Fundraiser on March 8, we all thank you! Supporting these programs helps our students have a great Willard experience. ALSO! CAMP TIMBER-LEE PERMISSION IS DUE BY NEXT MONDAY! On Wednesday, I will be out part of the day to support the student who lost his father at the wake and funeral. Our shared child may need some extra support that night as well. The children in class have been wonderful to their peer and have made me proud.
Please enjoy our wonderful child over the Winter Break. They have worked hard and deserve some time to just play and be kids. Thanks for sharing them with me. I have the best job in the world. I wish you all a healthy, and happy 2014. |
